The Ahr valley has a total vineyard area of around 540 hectares, making it one of the smallest winegrowing regions in Germany, as well as the most northerly.

On the other hand, the specific climatic and geological conditions have meant that 88% of this vineyard area is planted with red grape varieties - and that in turn makes the Ahr valley the largest contiguous red wine growing region in Germany.
